  • Abstract
The statistical behaviour of atmospheric air was investigated in a divergent electric field (rod-plane arrangement). The experimental campaign refers to both polarities as well as different gap distances (10, 30, 50 and 70 mm). The average breakdown voltage U50% as well as the standard deviation σ are reported and compared to predictions of the streamer inception voltage. Furthermore, investigations concerning streamer branching were performed. Within the investigated gap range, it seems that the polarity change plays the major role compared to a modification of the gap distance.
