Abstract
The microtuning of musical instruments has been a problem in the fields of music, music technology, and computational music. The MIDI standard has intrinsic weaknesses that have held back the development of flexible microtunable systems. This paper attacks this problem, addressing the weaknesses and underutilization of MIDI, and proposes a new approach for solving the microtuning and pitch representation problem by exploiting Polyphonic Aftertouch. GUI changes to exploit the solution are proposed.
