Abstract
We present a general method for optimising the dispersion map design for WDM transmission systems. For systems with only lumped amplification, the optimum dispersion map can be fully determined from the nonlinear effects. For Raman amplified systems, a trade off is required between nonlinearity and noise performance, making the optimisation process more complex.
