Abstract
Summary form only given. In the short term, as OLED infrastructure and technology mature, OLEDs will begin to make inroads into niche or specialty lighting applications. Longer term, if the tremendous rate of technical progress can be sustained into the next decade, OLED technology has the potential to impact general illumination applications. For general illumination, the natural goal for OLEDs is to displace the current fluorescent technology. The key challenges that must be met by OLED technology to enable general illumination applications are: to generate illumination quality white light; to achieve the low cost manufacturing potential of OLEDs; to increase lifetime at high brightness; and to increase efficiency.
