Abstract
Quantum well intermixing (QWI) has been used to create passive non-absorbing mirrors at the facet regions of 980 nm AlGaInAs pump lasers that significantly improve the reliability and high temperature performance due to suppressed catastrophic optical damage and improved single-mode stability. The long passive waveguide keeps the facet at the same temperature as the submount. The QWI 980 nm single-mode laser is suitable for operation without a TEC controlled temperature and can couple efficiently into a waveguide or optical fibre over a wide temperature range.
