Abstract
This paper demonstrates the feasibility of an approach to adaptive compensation of motion of towed passive SONAR arrays. If not compensated, transverse motion can degrade the increased measurement capacity of very long towed arrays. The approach is to compensate by use of a model relating towed array motion to towing vessel motion. This model contains an unknown parameter that is adaptively estimated to maximize a measure of beam-forming performance. A simple example describes the approach and a simulation of this example demonstrates its feasibility.
