Abstract :
This paper reviews methods for obtaining short time spectral estimates for sine waves in noise. In the presence of noise, autoregressive methods have well-known difficulties[1,2], while iterations based upon Pisarenko´s harmonic retrieval method perform quite well. This paper brings together the derivation of the Reddy-Thompson-Pisarenko harmonic retrieval method, and presents some experimental results relating to the behavior of its detection and estimation behavior. These indicate a detection threshold around -8 dB, and a small signal suppression effect.
