  • Abstract
This paper tentatively studies design from various points of view. It aims at defining the outline of a multidisciplinary basis from which a theory of design can be further developed. The paper proposes to combine traditional scientific approach (explanation oriented) with the science of artificial( action oriented) and to take into account contributions from various disciplinary (philosophy of sciences, engineering, cognitive psychology and ergonomic, social sciences....). Basic concepts and rationale of design are discussed. A simplified design process model is defined. A formal representation of knowledge on artefacts and the design process that manipulates the knowledge are presented. Future work is discussed in the conclusion.
