Abstract
An industrial motor drive suffers from periodic failures of the DC link aluminum electrolytic capacitor bank. Simulations pinpoint likely causes, including problems with the design of the balancing resistors. Stress on the capacitor can be produced by faults in the inverter and by open-conductor faults in the balancing resistors.
