Abstract
In the paper we discuss recently developed fibers called holey fibers and their special class called photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). Also a new communication and optical networking system employing Holey optical fiber is discussed. In the new model of light propagation the transverse refractive index profile and modal electric field are decomposed using orthogonal functions and the results obtained are employed in creating new WDM and DWDM communication systems and their possible utilisation in optical networks. Also a number of areas of interest in these fibers and their applications-to communication systems are explored.
