  • Abstract
In wireless ATM (W-ATM), the multiple access control (MAC) protocol is the main element that determines the efficiency of the system sharing the communication resources. With the proliferation of standards, it is becoming a daunting task to distinguish one protocol from another. We characterize several MAC protocols for W-ATM applications by comparing their performance as a function of different quality-of-service (QoS) parameters such as CBR, VBR, ABR and UBR traffic. Although each protocol has its own merit, it is unclear how these different protocols compare against each other on a unified basis.
