  • Abstract
Although many motor manufacturers have exported their manufacturing capabilities to foreign countries, most American companies still do the bulk of their design in the United States. There are reasons for the "design here-manufacture there" approach. Otherwise, why not do it all there? Obviously the advantage to foreign manufacture is labor costs. The advantage of designing products in America is more a matter of design control, and the synergy that exists between design and manufacturing functions. Both motor design and manufacture can be feasible in the US by adhering to practical design approaches.
