  • Abstract
    We present a new functional analysis of the optimized star coupler utilizing the directional coupling in the input array, which provides a physical insight into the unique diffraction properties of the device. From this analysis, a novel design recipe for the application to star couplers and arrayed waveguide gratings is given.
