Abstract :
Thyristor controlled dynamic brake (TCDB) is an effective device for improving transient stability of power systems [(C.S. Rao et al., February 1980)-(T.K.Nagsarkar et al., February 1980)]. Half-wave thyristor controlled dynamic brake (HWTCDB) is an economical version of the full-wave TCDB [C.S. Rao et al., July 1983]. In this paper the multi-layered fuzzy logic technique is applied to control the switching of HWTCDB. Simulation results of transient stability studies employing the above switching technique for a single-machine infinite bus system and a multi-machine system presented here, indicate that the proposed scheme provides better switching control strategy as compared to the HWTCDB [C.S. Rao et al., July 1983] in enhancing system stability and damping of oscillations.
