The Editor-in-Chief is delighted to announce that, starting in 2013, pagination in the IEEE Photonics Journal (PJ) will transition from page numbering to article numbering. The article number contains a topic code that represents the full scope of the journal while leaving enough room for future flexibility. The use of article numbering will provide enormous flexibility from the standpoints of both the publisher and the user. On the publishing side, it will enable the grouping of articles by topic while, at the same time, accelerating the time to online publication. In this new format, the whole collection will be searchable and cataloged by subject. Focus issues, such as Breakthroughs in Photonics, which is published annually in April, will be a standalone section searchable by topic or authors name.
