Abstract
Energy, a critical infrastructure, forms a vital input, especially in emerging countries like India. At present, the centralized grid-based electricity is considered the most convenient and reliable form of energy for consumers but is unable to keep pace with the growing demand, which requires 100% reliability for a digital economy. With more than 1.3 billion people who still have no access to modern forms of energy, this inability to meet consumer demand affects the energy security of the country at national and consumer levels. There is a need to consider augmentative mechanisms for bridging the demand supply gap such that they meet the varying needs of different types of consumers in an effective and efficient way. Microgrids are poised to become the best augmenting technology to address these needs.
