Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the discussion over regulatory and economic issues regarding the merger of sub-markets, which has been recently proposed for the Brazilian electricity industry. The results of the case studies have shown that the merger may lead to misleading or anti-economic locational signals, and that it can also produce a high opportunity for the exercise of market power by generators in the exporting sub-market.
