Abstract
A mathematical study of numerical reflections caused by several 2:1 and 3:1 spatially subgridded FDTD schemes is proposed. It provides rigorous justification for using odd subgridding ratios and collocated nodes. However, it also reveals that numerical reflections rapidly increase at large incidence angles and the effect of total reflection occurs, for example, in the analysis of waveguide circuits near cutoff. Mathematical predictions are confirmed by simulating sections of parallel-plate line and rectangular waveguide.
