Abstract
This paper describes a novel optimization methodology that integrates the availability awareness into the cost modeling of mesh and ring architectures. The methodology with its interactive nature allows the network planner to search for the best network solution according to the service provider´s needs. For a typical USA long-haul network, mesh solutions are compared to ring solutions from both cost and availability point of view.
