Abstract :
This paper investigates the impact of the bit correlation between pseudo-random binary sequences (PRBS) on the cross-phase modulation (XPM) effect that is one of the major nonlinear distortion sources in DWDM systems. A correlation function is derived and its results agree with simulated and measured results. This work reveals that at least 2 bit period de-correlation is needed to de-correlate the PRBS between adjacent channels in DWDM systems. Otherwise, the XPM-induced distortions measured from the PRBS sequences modulated signals deviate greatly from the data modulated signals.
