  • Abstract
    The paper focuses on the use of low rate turbo super-orthogonal codes for performing combined coding and spreading in an uplink transmission for the UMTS system. This type of scheme, where a low rate channel code is employed alone for bandwidth expansion, is designated as code-spread CDMA. A stand-alone simulator was built so that the performances of the already standardized DS-CDMA scheme and the proposed code-spread CDMA could be evaluated and compared. The modifications to the current UMTS structure in order to accommodate this new scheme are also discussed.
