  • Abstract
In "all-IP" wireless networks, it is necessary to adopt header compression schemes to reduce the protocol header size in order to utilize the limited bandwidth efficiently and make realtime services economically feasible and physically realizable. A new adaptive robust header compression algorithm based on RTS/CTS handshake, for real-time streams in wireless networks such as 3G platforms, is proposed and analyzed. Through adjusting the dimension of the variable sliding window (VSW) of the window-based least significant bits (W-LSB) encoding in the header compressor, with an accurate estimation of the wireless channel state, this adaptive algorithm can achieve a good balance of compression ratio and error-resistant robustness for its adaptive use in wireless links. We present simulation results that demonstrate the effectiveness of this adaptive algorithm over wireless links.
