Abstract
Different engineering areas use redundant modules but the notion of redundancy shows irreconcilable characters on the theoretical plane. We find diverging notions in the reliability theory and the information theory. Redundancy is the repetition of components from the systemic viewpoint, whereas a redundant codeword appears as an ´inflated´ item with respect to the minimal word. This paper puts forward a formal definition of redundancy that tries to reunify the odd approaches in one simple calculus.
