  • Abstract
The majority of software systems are developed using a centralized approach. As systems become more complex, software is becoming more difficult to develop and maintain. Distributed systems offer a solution to this difficulty. In this paper, we compare the use of agents and holons, key elements of a distributed system. We show how the design of a system impacts the software architecture, and how the structure of a problem guides the type of distributed system required. We conclude with the issues and requirements that a systems architect may utilize.
