Abstract
Data transmission, as in cdma2000® (3GPP2 CS0002-D, 2004), can usually tolerate more delays than voice. In terms of the total energy required to achieve a given quality of service (QoS), it is often advantageous to divide the energy among multiple transmissions. The paper looks at the optimal way to distribute energies among different transmissions. The optimal strategy turns out to be quite different for the forward and reverse links of cdma2000®.
