Abstract
In this paper, a novel modulation diversity assisted (MDA) ultra wideband (UWB) communication system is proposed. Pulse position modulation and pulse amplitude modulation are applied to successive pulses alternately to create modulation diversity and increase system capacity. The proposed system is similar to a transmitted-reference system in such that two pulses are always transmitted together in a doublet. One of the multipath distorted pulses can serve as a reference signal without explicit channel estimation. However, a MDA-UWB system possesses more advantages, such as smoother spectrum and higher bit rate. Coupled with an advanced low complexity receiver, detection performance is shown to be significantly better.
