Abstract
Summary form only given. This paper discusses mainly with two divisions of machines one is mains-excited machines and another one is converter-excited machines. Recently it has been estimated that the electrical energy that is consumed in (induction) motors accounts for around 60% of the electrical energy that is consumed by industry in developed economies, and this has produced a move to improve motor efficiency. Reducing the energy consumed in motors (for the same output power) reduces the energy that must be generated in power stations, and this cuts the emission of greenhouse gases from power stations.
