Abstract
We present an asset tracking and early warning system against theft called wireless asset tracking system using sensor networks (WATS-SN). This system uses concepts of wireless sensor networks to detect the probable theft of an asset. The key objectives of the system are based on the typical characteristics of the environment where WATS-SN has to operate. Then the overall architecture of the system is given, followed by a detailed MAC layer design for the system. The system is designed so as to give warning in case a protected asset is removed from its designated area. The design takes care of situations where the sensors can be removed from the asset or an attempt is made to disable the system itself. The design is made to minimise the battery consumption of the sensors. The WATS-SN is implemented in a simulated environment to verify that the design meets all the key system objectives.
