Abstract
Modern drives, especially PSM servo drives, require an exact position information for high precision positioning. This information is usually obtained from a resolver or encoder. If this sensor fails, the drives ceases working although the machine is still fine. For applications where fault-tolerance is more important than high precision, the described combination of an encoder with the INFORM system offers an elegant solution. After an introduction to the INFORM system, the control scheme is presented. It shows how the two position acquisition systems are connected. Test results show the applicabilty of this system
