Abstract
This paper presents our recent research on topology planning of the Urban Traffic Surveillance System (UTSS). Based on the proposed wireless sensor networks in UTSS, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method is applied to deal with the node optimization problem in UTSS. After discussing the related works on PSO, we built up a novel communication model of wireless sensor network to produce the qualities of "small world" in real road network around the 2nd ring road in Beijing. A series of simulations using the method of PSO are demonstrated to work out the optimal deployment of the sensor nodes upon the communication model.
