Abstract
In this paper, we present an overview of some current research topics which we consider essential for the advanced development of spoken language dialogue systems. In particular, we argue that dialogue systems have to become more flexible at integrating information from different sources and more proactive if their information processing yields relevant inferences. In addition, emotion recognition and adaptive dialogue management are discussed
