The use of Fixed Broadband Infrastructure for vehicle location and traffic management

This paper outlines the details on ongoing technology trials carried out by XCD Communication Ltd on behalf of Transport for London. The purpose of the trial was to investigate the possible combination of GPS based vehicle location technology and Fixed Wireless Access communications in relation to their potential use in Road User Charging or Distance Based Charging. The trial examined the key wireless performance characteristics, a possible system architecture as well as the definition of a business use case. The paper outlines the advantages of adoptioning WiMax as a preferred wireless access technology.
