Abstract
Developing new glass compositions suitable for broad band amplification in the 1200- 1700 nm wavelength region is important for the future optical communication systems. In this paper we review the results of our research on Bi ion doped glasses as well as rare earth ions Tm and Er-doped glasses. Of particular importance is the application of the glasses for short fibre devices and integrated waveguide devices fabrication using femtosecond laser writing. The host glass compositions reported are silicates and tellurites.
