Abstract :
RWE npower has developed an approach to the engineering of safety related systems within its fleet of coal and oil-fired power stations and its cogeneration, hydro and wind power generation sites. This Paper presents a case study of the application of this approach to a safety related system on one of its coal-fired power plant sites. The Paper shows examples of the numerical working involved and specifically addresses two issues that arise in practice. Firstly, the need to ensure that all proposed engineering work is considered for any relevance to the causation or prevention of hazardous events. Secondly, how to share roles and responsibilities between the end user and a systems integrator providing only a part of the overall solution.
