Abstract
We propose an energy-efficient geographical routing (EGR) mechanism to reduce energy consumption in wireless communication networks. We construct an initial routing path by AODV first and apply the EGR to find relay nodes under relay region. The relay region is derived from the radio propagation model. And to balance traffic load, the EGR follows Energy-Proportional Principle (EPP) and in the relay region elects the relay node with the highest remaining energy. Further, the EGR can cooperate with any wireless routing protocol by performing the proposed procedure. Compared to the traditional routing methods, the simulations show that EGR effectively utilizes energy especially when mobile nodes move with low speed.
