Abstract
It is an honour to present a paper in this memorial session dedicated to the professional life of Prof. J. R. James. He was a major contributor in advancing our scientific and engineering knowledge about microstrip and mobile communication antennas. His books in these areas have received world wide attention and have been regarded as standard references. His recent co-edited book was very timely in documenting the state of art in the development of mobile communication antennas [K. Fujimoto and J.R. James, 2001]. I attended several of his talks and always enjoyed his application-oriented presentations. Since this is one of the areas that the author is involved in and also contributed to his edited book, the author thought it would be appropriate to elaborate on some recent advances in applying electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures for low profile antenna designs based on our recent publications [Y. Rahmat-Samii and F. Yang, 2006].
