Abstract :
The paper proposes a response-based emergency control scheme to prevent transient instability, which is developed on a hybrid systems modeling and control framework. Power systems following large disturbances are modeled with continuous dynamics and discrete events interacted. With the model built, a supervisory control strategy is employed to accommodate hybrid dynamics. The problem of deciding emergency control actions is then embedded into a model predictive control (MPC) framework. A complexity reduction technique is introduced to make the control scheme applicable to actual power systems. The technique takes advantage of data provided by wide-area measurement systems (WAMS). Numerical simulations are conducted on New England 10 machine 39 bus system to verify the effectiveness of the proposed emergency control scheme.
