Abstract
The growing per-channel data rates used in optical transmission on the one hand, and the rapidly increasing capabilities of high-speed electronics and signal processing on the other, have created a new paradigm of long-haul fibre-optic system design. The new limiting factors in transmission and suggestions for future evolution will be discussed.
