Abstract
This paper focuses on IP multicast technology. It gives illustrations on how a simulated model is built through simulation software OPNET Modeler, based on the example of the video conferencing given below. On one hand, it compares the performance of unicast and multicast, gives analysis on video conferencing traffic sent, packet end to end delay, point to point link throughput of the network; one the other hand, the improvements of network performance by switching Rendezvous Point tree to Short Path Tree in multicast simulation are explained. Then an overall study on the PIM-SM protocol will be given based on the results of simulation.
