Abstract
A novel handset antenna for global positioning system (GPS) applications is proposed to cover the three GPS bands (L1, L2 and L5, namely 1575.42 MHZ, 1227.6 MHZ and 1176.45 MHZ). The proposed antenna size is only 17 mm times 17 mm in aperture corresponding to lambda/15 times lambda/15 ( lambda= free space wavelength) and lambda/6 length. The tri-band operation is achieved through the incorporation of a dielectrically-loaded quadrifilar helix antenna (DQHA) and a dielectrically-loaded octafilar helix antenna (DOHA) into one structure by coaxially mounting them in a ldquopiggybackrdquo fashion. The dielectric loading with the special feeding mechanism yields an antenna with low proximity effects and small size to be suitable for mobile handset.
