Abstract
High energy costs are leading to the use of more sophisticated and complex control schemes to achieve energy conservation. In this paper the idiomatic control concept published by Bristol is examined from a chemical process perspective. The control design is decomposed into control sub-structures, the idioms. The idioms are then classified and developed to give useful insights in the understanding of the structure of complex control schemes. Practical industrial control system designs are used for illustration.
