Abstract
The paper industry is highly energy intensive and offers numerous opportunities for energy management and conservation techniques. Since their impingement on cash flow is an important consideration, those mills which purchase both fuel and power offer proportionately greater incentives to the adoption of such methods. Small paper mills commonly fall into this category and our studies have shown that analytical and control techniques originally developed for use in large mills can be reduced to much simpler hardware and software forms more suited to the smaller mill and without sacrificing the degree of savings which can be achieved.
