  • Abstract
This project demonstrates what has to be a new across-the-board philosophy about data and its integrity. Expert systems cannot alone solve complex problems. It is only the integration of expert system knowledge bases and relational database management systems that will demonstrate a wide range of AI applications. Engineering environments with any potential danger to workers or civilians are going to have to become intelligent about day-to-day operations. This points to a day of reckoning for the engineering, plant operations, maintenance, and information systems groups. Working together is going to have to mean more than having a "LAN." Our goal is to start organizing configuration management systems that combine existing databases of plant data with expert system technology. This will provide the living model needed to intelligently run today\´s more complex industrial and business environments.
