Abstract
BATCHES [1] is a simulation system used to manage multiproduct and multipurpose batch/semicontinuous (B/SC) processes in the biochemical, pharmaceutical, specialty chemical, and food industries. The operational features of B/SC processes introduce several complexities to a dynamic modeling scheme. The approach used to model dynamic B/SC processes in the presence of operational complexities is outlined and described with reference to optimizing an esterification process.
