Abstract
Most literature on adaptive control techniques assumes that the outputs are linear combinations of the states. This implies that forcing the states behave well will also force the outputs to behave well. Neither of these two assumptions is true for modern jet engines, however: the dynamics tend to have significant D matrices as well as outputs which may behave poorly even though the states behave well. In this paper, a model-reference adapive control law based upon Lyapunov design techniques is presented for systems with D matrices. By controlling both the states and the outputs, perfect model-following and good output performance can be obtained. An example based upon the GE16 engine is presented to illustrate the design.
