Abstract
As heat generation per unit area from telecommunications equipment increases, equipment buildings often require extensive cooling, even in midwinter, to maintain the reference room temperature. A thermosiphon system has been developed for airconditioning in new equipment buildings. In this system, no power is required for circulating the refrigerant and the thermosiphon cooling capacity increases as the outdoor air temperature decreases. Therfore, it is expected that energy consumption for airconditioning will be greatly reduced when the thermosiphon is used for cooling in winter as well as other cool seasons. This paper describes the mechanism and characteristics of a newly developed airconditioning system employing a thermosiphon. Energy saving is also discussed for when this system is used in a telecommunications building.
