Abstract
The use of encryption technology in the delivery of premium television is described. Signal security concepts such as scrambling, encryption, key-management etc. as applied in the ORION and SIGMA systems are discussed. In order to asess the effects of transmission link and system induced impairments, an analytical procedure is developed for the encryption method used in ORION/SIGMA. System performance curves obtained from the analysis are presented. Finally, potential applications of ORION, SIGMA systems in the secure transmission of non-video information is discussed.
