Abstract
Continuous Phase Frequency Shift Keying (CPFSK) is known to have the capability for excellent bandwidth and power efficiency for use in nonlinear channels. This paper investigates practical problems in implementing CPFSK modems, such as hardware complexity as a function of number of states in the phase trellis, and proposes a generic modem architecture that is suitable for applications using a variety of phase modulated waveforms at data rates below 1 Mb/s. Results are shown on the construction, firmware development and evaluation of a hardware test bed supporting 4800b/s data traffic with manpack radios over FLTSAT 5-Khz channels.
