Abstract
The use of circuit switching for voice and bulky traffic and the use of packet switching for interactive traffic have been firmly established as cost effective utilization of transmission resources. The concept of capturing both of these switching technologies within a single switching system, which is commonly called a hybrid switch, has been the subject of many studies and analyses. Through the perspective of a design analysis process, this document discusses a proposed military hybrid switching system and its militarized circuit and packet switching components termed respectively Automatic Telegraph System-90, DELTACS, (ref. 1), and SOPHONET (ref. 2).
