Abstract
The opening presentation will introduce risk concepts and terminology, and how they are reflected in the UK regulatory system for occupational safety generally. The UK approach to risk management will be outlined and compared with the legal requirement for `the provision and maintenance of plant and systems of work that are, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to health¿, including risk criteria and how to evaluate any possible risk reduction including gross disproportion. The role of safety instrumented systems in risk reduction, both frequency and consequence, will be outlined as an introduction to the following sessions.
